Maribor, Slovenia's second-largest city, and Pohorje, the green mountain range just above it, offer an excellent combination of urban culture and natural experiences.
Maribor is a city that many tourists overlook on their way to Ljubljana or the coast. This is a mistake, as Slovenia's second-largest city offers rich cultural heritage, excellent cuisine, and immediate proximity to one of Slovenia's most beautiful mountain ranges -- Pohorje. With a rental car, you can discover both in a single day.
Maribor -- city on the Drava
Start with a visit to the old town center, where you will find the oldest vine in the world -- the Old Vine, which has been growing on the banks of the Drava for over 400 years and is listed in the Guinness Book of Records. Stroll along the Main Square, visit Maribor Castle, and stop at one of the many cafes along Lent -- the promenade by the river.
Wine route toward Pohorje
From Maribor, drive south through the wine-growing hills of Podravje. Stop at one of the wine cellars and taste local varieties -- Sipon, Laski Rizling, and Renski Rizling. The road leads you through villages with views stretching from vineyards to alpine peaks in the background.
Pohorje -- a natural paradise
Pohorje is a green mountain range rising directly above Maribor. In winter, it is a popular ski resort; in summer, a paradise for hikers, cyclists, and nature lovers. Drive up to Areh, from where views open up across all of Podravje. Visit Black Lake, a mysterious pond in the middle of the forest, and walk along the Pohorje Gems educational trail.
Podravje cuisine
Podravje cuisine is a unique blend of Central European and Mediterranean influences. Try Styrian zganci, sauerkraut with cracklings, mushroom soup from the Pohorje forests, and the famous Maribor potica. For dessert, treat yourself to gibanica, a traditional pastry with four fillings -- cottage cheese, apples, walnuts, and poppy seeds.
Practical tips
From Ljubljana to Maribor is approximately 130 km by motorway, or a good hour of driving. We recommend taking at least a full day for visiting Maribor and Pohorje, ideally two. DivoCars also has an office in Maribor, where you can pick up or return your vehicle.
