The Slovenian coast is only 47 kilometers long, yet it hides a surprising number of treasures. Discover the lesser-known spots that most tourists miss.
When most people think of the Slovenian coast, Portoroz, Piran, and Koper come to mind. But this short stretch along the Adriatic Sea hides much more than just three well-known coastal towns. With a rental car, you can discover hidden gems that you will not find in any tourist guide.
Strunjan -- a nature reserve of tranquility
Between Izola and Piran lies Strunjan, a nature park with steep cliffs rising directly from the sea. Strunjan Landscape Park is home to the only natural sea beach in Slovenia -- Moon Bay. Visit the old church above the cliff and walk along a path offering views you will not see anywhere else on the coast.
Secovlje Salt Pans -- a living heritage
At the very southern tip of the Slovenian coast, right on the Croatian border, stretch the Secovlje Salt Pans. Here, salt is still harvested in a traditional way that has not changed for over 700 years. A walk through the salt pans at sunset is an unforgettable experience. In the museum shop, you can buy natural salt and salt-based products.
Hrastovlje -- the church with the Dance of Death
Just 20 minutes drive from the coast, in the interior of Istria, lies Hrastovlje. A small fortified church hides one of the most important frescoes in Slovenia -- the famous 15th-century Dance of Death. Visits are possible with a guide who will explain the symbolism of these exceptional artworks.
Debeli rtic -- the hidden beach
Between Ankaran and Koper lies Debeli rtic, a natural spa with thermal water. Besides the well-known spa complex, smaller beaches hide, accessible only on foot or by bicycle. This is an ideal place for a peaceful day by the sea, away from the crowds of Portoroz.
Slovenian Istria inland
Leave the coast and drive into the interior of Slovenian Istria. Villages like Korte, Padna, and Marezige offer superb sea views, local taverns with Istrian cuisine, and wine cellars where you can taste local Refosk and Malvazija wines. This is Slovenia as only the locals know it.
