Everything you need to know about renting a car in Slovenia -- from documentation and insurance to the toll system and driving rules. A practical guide for a worry-free visit.
Slovenia is an ideal destination for exploring by car. The country is compact, roads are well-maintained, and distances are short. However, renting a car in a foreign country requires some preparation. In this guide, we have gathered everything you need to know before getting behind the wheel in Slovenia.
Documentation
To rent a car in Slovenia, you need a valid driving license. EU citizens can use their national license, while visitors from outside the EU need an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to their national license. Most rental companies require a minimum age of 21 and at least one year of driving experience. At DivoCars, we allow rentals from the age of 18.
Toll system
Slovenia uses a vignette system for motorways. An electronic e-vignette is mandatory for driving on motorways and expressways. You can purchase it at petrol stations, post offices, or online at evinjeta.si. Weekly (EUR 15), monthly (EUR 30), and annual vignettes (EUR 110) are available. All DivoCars vehicles already come with a valid annual vignette included.
Insurance and deposit
Basic insurance (CDW) is included in the rental price. We recommend upgrading to SCDW (Super Collision Damage Waiver), which reduces the deductible to a minimum. At DivoCars, we offer three insurance levels -- Basic, CDW, and SCDW -- so you can choose the level of protection that best suits your needs.
Road traffic rules
In Slovenia, we drive on the right side of the road. Speed limits are 50 km/h in urban areas, 90 km/h outside urban areas, 110 km/h on expressways, and 130 km/h on motorways. Headlights must be on at all times while driving, and using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited without a hands-free system. In winter, winter tires or chains are mandatory from November 15 to March 15.
